This week's reading challenge - The Beaufort Chronicles by Judith Arnopp

 

I was telling Jamie, from The Whispering Bookworm about my Tudor challenge this year (if you have not checked Jamie's blog out yet, then I suggest you do - it is a very popular historical fiction blog). Jamie said that if it was Tudor fiction I was looking for then I was to look no further than the novels by Judith Arnopp. Jamie suggested I start with The Beaufort Chronicles, which depicts the life of Margaret Beaufort.

 

So, that is this week's reading challenge, set by Jamie. Hopefully, I will be back next week and I will let you know what I thought of The Beaufort Bride.

Review

 

As I have come to expect from Tony Riches books, this one did not disappoint. It is a captivating story of a young man who never wanted to be king in the first place, and yet now that he is, he does not shrink from the responsibility.
 
I thought Henry was magnificently depicted, and I really felt as if I knew him after the story had finished.
 
This series has been simply delightful and I cannot wait to read more books from this very talented author.

Today we are taking a look at Lady Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII.

Book Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Red Queen by Philippa Gregory

 

The second book in Philippa's stunning new series, The Cousins' War, brings to life the story of Margaret Beaufort, a shadowy and mysterious character in the first book of the series - The White Queen - but who now takes centre stage in the bitter struggle of The War of the Roses.

The Red Queen tells the story of the child-bride of Edmund Tudor, who, although widowed in her early teens, uses her determination of character and wily plotting to infiltrate the house of York under the guise of loyal friend and servant, undermine the support for Richard III and ultimately ensure that her only son, Henry Tudor, triumphs as King of England. Through collaboration with the dowager Queen Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret agrees a betrothal between Henry and Elizabeth's daughter, thereby uniting the families and resolving the Cousins War once and for all by founding of the Tudor dynasty.

 

Review

I have never read a Philippa Gregory novel before, nor had I read the first book in the series, but I was assured by a friend of a friend that this novel stands alone, and as I wanted to read a novel about Margaret Beaufort I dived straight in.

I wasn't too sure if I was meant to like Margaret or not. Her anxiety, his OCD tendencies was quite painful to read about, and as was her being a child bride. And yet, she comes across as a very determined woman who will lie and scheme to get what she wants.

I thought this was a good read, but it didn't blow me away as I thought it would.

Another brilliant addition to the series. I am really enjoying getting to know the Tudor forefathers as it were. Jasper Tudor was instrumental in getting his nephew onto the throne - this is his story and what a wonderfully written story it is.

 

If you like well researched historical fiction then you cannot go wrong with this novel.

Up close and personal with The Tudors - Owen Tudor

 

 

On 22nd August 1485 Henry Tudor ended the three hundred year Plantagenet dynasties rule of England. But who was Henry Tudor and what was his claim to the throne?

To answer this question, we need to take a look at Henry ancestors, and in particular his grandfather, Owen.
